Why airline cannot allow use your own headphone
I've flown on over 20 different airlines. Most of them legacy carriers.
My question is, why don't airlines let you use your standard 3.5mm earphones, over the dual plug earphones. I mean in this day and age, everyone has an iPhone or some related 3.5mm plug that they can use on board the plane, so why don't the airlines give you the option to use your own plug.
This would also save on costs as less people would use those awful tacky airlines headphones.
Why airline headphone use the dual pin audio jacks ?
At the airline I work for we have dual pin audio jacks. Customers can use their own headphones if it is a dual pin or has an adaptor for dual pin. This is because when using a single pin in a dual pin audio jack, the audio jack overheats and one side burns out, meaning the next customer has only audio in one ear and causes a substantial cost to replacing the audio jack.
So that is why we tell customers who we observe using a single pin in a dual pin audio jack to not use them.
In Australia dual pin adapters cost less than $10 from airport newsagents and duty free shops.
I would love to know why airlines use the dual pin audio jacks?
